Washington spent his boyhood in Malden, West Virginia, where his began his education through self teaching and attending school during the winter. Washington subsequently established the Tuskegee Institute for "Colored Students" in Alabama (now Tuskegee University) and was an adviser to Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and Howard Taft regarding racial matters.
